DOLAN 4TH, EYSTER 3RD
DAN COLMAN WINS 1.4 MILLION AT SEMINOLE HARD ROCK: Dan Colman seems to win everything he enters this year. In fact, this kid is the leading earner in 2014 tournament poker if you don't count the One Drop (which by the way he won for 15 million **Credit to a Christian Harder tweet for that one). This was his fourth more than one million dollar score in 2014 alone. That said we were rooting for Gulf Coaster John Dolan. Dolan came to the final table as a short stack and managed to make it to 4th place. That paid just over half a million. $548k is one of the biggest fourth place prizes of the year. Unfortunately for John, this tournament also offered two million plus scores and they were nabbed by Colman and Mike Leah who finished second. We were pulling just as hard for Jacob Naquin who finished 16th for just under 60k . Natasha Barbour finished 12th for a few dollars under 100k. KEVIN EYSTER SETTLES (SETTLES?) FOR 219K: The Winstar had a steep drop from first place to second and third. Sounds like there was no chop and Jason Helder got all of the $1,000,000 for winning the event. Lafayette Legend Kevin Eyster got knocked out when his AK got all in preflop against the pocket Jacks of second place finisher Travis Rice. |

DOLAN, NAQUIN CHASING MILLIONS: EYSTER CHIPLEADER AT WINSTAR FINAL TABLE: Lafayette's own Kevin Eyster sits at 5.7 million at a loaded final table (+1) that includes Texan Jonathan Gaviao (2.9 million), one time New Orleanian David "ODB" Baker (1.7 million), and Travis Rice. A strange payout structure means first place pays 1 million dollars even. Second only 340k, 3rd 219k, and 4th 134k. DOLAN SECOND IN CHIPS AT THE HARD ROCK: The Seminole Hard Rock guaranteed millions and came up 2.5 million short. They honored the guaranteed and poker players everywhere were wishing they were there to cash in on that extra lagniappe, believed to be the biggest overlay in history... by far. John Dolan comes back to the felt with 5.2 million in chips, second only to Martin Hanowksi's 5.8 million. Brian Hawkins, another Florida grinder is third with 4.2 million. Natasha Barbour (1.3 million) and Jacob Naquin (1.2 million) are both short stacks, but in the thick of things with only 18 players left. They are guaranteed at least 59k. A lot of studs remain with Dan Colman (the Big One for One Drop bracelet winner), Mike Leah, Russell Thomas, Curt Kohlberg, and Roman Valerstein all returning. |

COAST POKER CHAMPIONSHIP MAIN EVENT: COSTNER CHOPS: Welcome back, Gabe! Gabe Costner found himself in familiar territory yesterday when he chopped the Main Event three ways. Chipleader Carl McGowan (of Georgia) got most of the loot and the Movado watch. Gabe made off with the second biggest chunk, and Chris Savage of Baton Rouge third most. We are told all three players made more than 50k. Congrats to all three players. This final table had a lot of rooting interests from all over our readership, and came from all over different parts of the coast. Mark Wilds (6th 19k), and Gabe, represented Biloxi at the final table. Wilds finished sixth. Robbie Matthews (9th, 8.8k) and Savage represented Baton Rouge/Denham Springs . BJ McBrayer (7th, 15.9k) and Justin Hooker (8th, 12k) rolled down from Tuscaloosa. Rami Owera (5th 23k) of Pensacola represented the panhandle winning 23k for fifth. Ryan Brown, like McGowan, also repped Georgia well winning 26k for fourth. ALPANDINAR JUST MISSES BACK TO BACK FINAL TABLES: Frank Alpandinar, last spotted at the previous Beau Rivage Main Event final table, finished one spot short this go round. He won 6.7k for tenth place. Nick Graphia won 5.6k for 15th. Ashly Butler ended 19th winning 3.5k. He joined Hiep Doan and Faith Giordano as min-cashers. |

Congrats to Corrie Wunstel, another one of the good guys in the game, who battled all the way back from a mid-size stack to win first place and 65k in the Beau Rivage's opening event. The Baton Rouge player beat Nick Powers of Jackson, GA and Matt Silva of Marietta, GA in three way action. Powers earned 41k and Silva 27k. Robert Pierce of Slidell, LA won 23k for 4th. Also at the final table: John Stocher of Houston (5th 19k), Kwang Yun of Gulfport (6th 15k), Houng Dang of Norcross, GA (7th 11k), Jerry Stumbo of Ocean Springs (8th 7.8k), and Jerry Ard of Monticello, MS (9th 5.3k). |

BEAU RIVAGE GULF COAST POKER CHAMPIONSHIP: Three flights
in the 300k guarantee narrowed 1400 players to just the 153
left standing today. Lots of familiar names are in the
mix. First place is roughly 66k, the prize pool is
over 400k, so a lot of money to play for with Michael Cooper
of McDonough, Georgia leading the way. Cooper will open his bag to find 311k today. Behind him at 258k, Igor Kryuda of Memphis is one of only four players over 200k. Also over that mark are Tam Ngueyn of Birmingham (231k), and Jeff Zelko of Norcross, GA. Jerry Ard of Monticello, at 197k, once again resides near the top of the chip counts which he does quite often at the Beau at 197k. Bill Sever of Houston, TX finished the day also just under 200k. Gordon Hardy (pictured) of Bay Minette, AL will get a lot chips to stack in crazy ways today too, finishing with 185k. Familiar names, Hiep Doan, Ben Thomas, Judy Rhodes, and Eric Wilkinson pushed into the top twenty with stacks all over 140k. John Riola, Corrie Wunstel, Dennis Jones, Ray Parker ended with over 100k each. Mark Wilds, Chad Melerine, Heather Reese, Michael Benton, Guy Turner, Todd Skinner, Matt Blanchard, also return but have some work to do with below average stacks. BEAU RIVAGE 50K GUARANTEE:
SEVILLE HALE WINS IT: This monthly 50K guarantee has become a bit of a destination tournament at the Coast's destination Casino resort. Players from East Texas to the Florida panhandle travel for the juicy prize pool in the weekend tournament. Seville Hale, one of those traveling, hails from Pensacola and finished first winning 24k. Local Bert Ladner can't seem not cash in his home casino winning 4k for sixth. GCP blogger Davy Murrah finished 9th for 1600. Captain Ron Hope came in to day two with 2.5 big blinds and ran it all the way up to a 16th place finish winning $800. Mihail Karasoulis won $800 for 17th place. Kenny Milam finished 23rd for $680. Moe Moeini cashed again but this time the first to exit once they hit the money. BLOGGERS GONNA BLOG: Lots of updates all over the site. 2014 WSOP:
MAIN EVENT STORYLINES: Monkey might
not have played this year's Main Event but he and his investors
put four players into the tournament. They included
two of our own GCPers Wild Bill and Kai Landry. Also,
getting the nod, in fact, the first two selected, friend of
GCP BJ McBrayer and Josh Re Kenny Milam and Sam Bailey (pictured) went the deepest out of the bunch of players who won their seats via Harrahs New Orleans. Bailey cashed and Kenny finished about 50 players short. Also in the money Jonathan Hart, Tim Burt, Sean Winter, Mark Gallagher (TX), and David Smith (Walls, MS). Andrew Liporace, a former Harrahs New Orleans player, made headlines as a chipleader early on in the tournament. Liporace finished 158th for 52k. Kevin Eyster of Lafayette continued his hot summer with a 44k payday finishing 204th. Benton Blakeman finished 282nd for 38k. Leif Force finished highest of all the Gulf Coasters bowing out in 21st place, slightly ahead of Brian Roberts of Houston who finished 26th. Force won 286k as did Roberts and Bryan Devonshire. Interesting about Force, and many of the other Gulf Coasters like Eyster and Hart, their Main Event cashes followed a successful summer and recent cashes in other WSOP events. Mark Newhouse, made an improbable second Main Event final table in a row. Considering the size of the fields this has to be one of the greatest accomplishments in Main Event history. Newhouse is one of four Americans to make the final table and enters third in chips. |

2014 WSOP: EFFORTS TO GET CHAD BROWN HIS BRACELET: Wow, is all we can say. Much respect to Monkey and Jennifer Gay and to all involved in the ongoing effort to get Chad Brown his honorary bracelet at his hospice. Cool thing for the poker world, and a big thank you to the WSOP for making it happen too. Read the latest update from Jennifer Gay we shared on our facebook page here. DA KID GAVE IT ALL: Congrats to Austin Bursavich on an incredible run in the Monster stack. Things went south on him a little bit (not in a Freddy Deeb way) after entering three tables as one of just three players with 10 million in chips. He ended up ~20th winning over 50k. More deep runs for this kid, the sooner the better--how about the Main Event? SUMRALL GOING TO VEGAS: Harrahs had their last satellite to the Main Event in Las Vegas and one of the good guys Chris Sumrall took it down. It's been a whirlwind month for the Houma native. He recently hit the Bad Beat jackpot and decided he was going to put 10k of that toward playing in his first Main Event. No need for that now, the dude is freerolling. So happy for him. Also great runs by some players that have already won seats including Mega Master Kenny Milam and Brigette Fredericks who both cashed and just missed winning a second seat. Also thanks to Harrahs NOLA for adding second seats previously, and funding the bounties on the players that had already won this go round. Great tournament series and hopefully an annual fixture. |

Jonathan Little finished in 26th for 14k in event 42 PLO Six handed. Sure we missed some of you. We know Teddy Connor also cashed a couple of times out in Vegas, congrats to everybody who's made some money. |

2014 WSOP:
888 POKER AMBASSADOR LOUIS SUAREZ UNSUCCESSFULLY ATE, ATE, ATE THREE PEOPLE: It's a bad week for the 888 brand. Their new signing promptly bit a person and received international scorn. Literally, days after announcing their partnership with Suarez, the Uruguayan soccer star made news for sinking his teeth in an Italian. This is his third biting on the soccer pitch. Not the kind of impact you are looking for in a spokesperson. We are a big believer in using the gifts God gave you, and Suarez got some chompers, but perhaps he can put those teeth to better use. He'd make a pretty good bottle opener we think. MONSTER STACK DEBUTS DESPITE WSOP MISGIVINGS TO RECORD NUMBERS: About six months ago, at the urging of players the WSOP agreed to host a Monster Stack tournament. Despite assurance from suit Seth Palansky to players like Matt Salsberg on a famous twitter exchange that rec players didn't care about deep stacks, the Rio was flooded with players looking to take advantage of the Monster Stack and the hours of entertainment it provided. Lesson learned? After the same suits crowed about the events success, they once scoffed at, we can only hope there will be more of these in the future. The most common remark on twitter surrounding this event is that it's kind of a like a junior Main Event with the atmosphere throughout the Rio matching the big tournament for electricity. BIG ONE FOR ONE DROP, MILLION DOLLAR BUY-IN PARTICIPANTS: There are some rich businessmen and there are some poker pros, some you expect, some you wouldn't. Here are the highlights of the 37 man roster. Unless you are an expert on rich businessmen with a million dollars burning through their pockets we'll just focus on the pros: Brian Rast, John Juanda, Phillipp Guissem, Jean-Robert Bellande, Antonio Esfandiari, Scott Seiver, Dan Smith, Greg Merson, Phil Galfond, Phil Ivey, Daniel Negreanu, Erick Lindgren (interesting to say the least), Vanessa Selbst, Sam Trickett, Dan Cates, Tony Gregg, Jason Mercier, Guy Laliberte, Noah Schwartz, and Isaac Haxton. Somebody, and their backers is about to get rich, or if a businessman somehow wins this... richer. |

2014 WSOP:
LAFAYETTE'S EYSTER WINS BRACELET: Kevin Eyster, a snowboarder who now lives in Colorado to be, you know, closer to snow, wore a Saints hat and a Moss jersey while winning his first bracelet. Moss, a complicated figure is one of the all time great talents to play football. Kevin doesn't seem anywhere near that complicated but right now he's made the case that he's the greatest tournament poker player Louisiana has ever birthed. You say hyperbole? What about Keith Lehr? What about Fred Berger? We'll get to all that. First off, to the lede we buried, Kevin Eyster beat 540 other players to win his first World Series of Poker bracelet in the 5k Six-max No Limit Hold'em event. Barely 24, Eyster over the last two years has won a WPT tournament, made multiple final tables and now has won a WSOP bracelet. Eyster shined at a final table that include Andrew "luckychewy" Lichtenberger (3rd), Bryn Kenney (4th), Jeremy Kottler (5th) and Belgian pro Pierre Neuville (2nd). Eyster won 622k for first. This cash moved him into first all time for money won by a Louisianan with over 2 million in lifetime earnings. Third place in Louisiana's ranking has only half the money Eyster's won. He's a big deal. He's also just outside the top ten for total live cashes, which seems insignificant until you remember he's only 24. One sick player. MONKEY'S MINIONS PLAYING FOR MILLIONS? The Poker Monkey is sending three lucky players to this years WSOP Main Event. First place is guaranteed 10 million dollars. That's a lot of money to a lot of people. Do you wanna own a piece of the Monkey Threesome? You can, because he's selling shares. Go to Monkey's blog for the latest. RIO SECURITY LIVING UP TO SECURITY IN THE REAL RIO: World Cup travelers have been told to beware the rampant crime infesting the city emanating from the favelas of Rio De Janeiro. At least those visitors got a heads up. World Series of Poker players should be equally warned about the abysmal security at the Rio Hotel in Las Vegas. There have been tales of at least one mugging in the parking lot, a spate of room breaks in, a "security" presence that is essentially nonexistent (unless you are trying to sell lammers), and fill in the blank theft by "rake" joke. On the one hand you have to credit the Rio hotel for going for an authentic Rio De Janeiro experience, it is exciting to be fearful of getting your bankroll stolen, on the other hand... WTF??? While one of the GCPers was there, at least once, after requesting to be on the do not enter room list, employees did just that. "We were just checking to see if the room was occupied..." "Uhhh... yeah, better to do that in person when there is a do not disturb sign on the door, a request in the system to not to be entered, and a record at the front desk showing check-in." Thanks for the service! Anyway, the powers-that-be at the WSOP have pretty much ignored the favela-like conditions in the Rio Towers on social media but to be fair they will... prepare to chuckle in derision... talk to you about in person. So travelers beware keep your cash, your laptop, your chips and anything else you'd rather not stolen on you at all times, unless you going to the parking lot... then you might want to risk leaving them in the room. 2014 WSOP: COX, PHILACHACK CLOSE IN EVENT 23: Chad Cox of Mobile, AL won 73k for fourth place, while Garland, TX's Andy Philachack won 155k for second. 1473 players signed up for the 1k No Limit Hold'Em Turbo. Caufman Talley of Lafayette finished 28th. Also in the money Arvis Cumbest of Pascagoula, MS, TUCKER AND TOYE'S FUN AND GAMES IN EVENT 21: Bobby Toye of New Orleans, a former GCP blogger finished 39th in the massive 1k No LImit Hold'em field. Also in the money Bronson Tucker (a WSOP Academy coach at the NOLA stop) from Austin, TX and Tripp Kirk of Atlanta, GA. HATCHING A PLAN: Arthur Hatcher of Baton Rouge, finishes 28th in the Seniors Event. The Baton Rouge rounder scored his first cash at the World Series. Dan Heimiller won the event getting past a final table that included Dennis Phillips and David Tran. CAPTAIN TOM JUST MISSES BRACELET GLORY LIMIT 2-7 TRIPLE DRAW LOWBALL: Tom Franklin of Gulfport finishes second for 76k in the $1500 buy-in event. Todd Bui bested the Good Captain in heads-up play. 348 player signed up for the event and at least 200 of them knew the rules of the game. Meanwhile in Event 13, the 10k No-Limit 2-7 Draw Lowball event Jason Mercier finished third on a loaded final table. |

WSOP CIRCUIT NEW ORLEANS:
MAIN EVENT: CAMPANELLO WINS SEE-SAW BATTLE: Bryan Campanello bested Gary Friedlander in heads up play. The two Texans battled for a long time exchanging chip-leads and suckouts. Both looked poised to close the other out, when the other would get there. When it wa finally settled Campanello a youngster won the 175k, the National Championship seat, and ring. Friedlander pocket 108k for second. Congrats to one of the great guys of poker Danny Doucet of Opelousas, LA who finished fourth, just shy of 60k. Great job Danny! Ben Thomas of Baton Rouge just missed the final table winning 13k for 12th. Curtis terry of Metairie also won north of 10k finished 15th. Ashly Butler of Metairie who 7k for 21st. TK Miles popped up again on the coast to win 5k for 26th. Ken Hebert and Drake Roetger of Lafayette also made the money. A slew of Texans in there too. Complete results here. LOVELL LOVING FIRST PLACE IN EVENT 12: The Killeen native bagged 16k for first and topped NOLA local Brandon Jackson in heads up play. Jackson had him about three to one but couldn't hold on. Bronson Tucker, one of the WSOP Academy instructors finished ninth. (BTW, Jeff Madsen who was the lead instructor at a WSOPA in NOLA last year just took down the HPT event in California). Sam Al Shurieki of Pensacola seventh and Ray Caywood of Houston fourth. Also in the money Dan Rivera, Dennis Phillips and Barth Melius. SENIORS DIDN'T CHOP: We know two local regs made it into the top five. And we know there was no chop, which is a headline in itself. And that's why it is the headline. BEAU RIVAGE 50K AND LINKS: WHITTINGTON MAKES MOST OF CHOP: Philip Whittington of Lafayette, LA got the biggest chunk of the chop. 173 players stayed on the coast and played in the 50k guarantee. Shaun Johnston of D'Iberville, MS listed second, with Thomas Ballow of Denham Springts, LA third. David Mendez of New Orleans fifth. Ludek Sisak of Biloxi ninth. Bruce Taylor, Bert Ladner and Larry White all made the money. Congrats to all that played and won. CHAMP CRUMPLES CARDS, KICKED OUT: Ryan Eriquezzo, a "pro's pro", and 2012 National Champion, can't take a bad beat too well. He lost a massive pot in the Parx casino in a tournament when his pocket Aces were cracked by the pocket Queens of his opponent. Still, he had 85k left. Then, Eriquezzo tweeted he got kicked out because he crumbled his cards. Pretty hard to crumble cards, but that's since been corrected to crumpled. Surprisingly, many in the poker community came to Eriquezzo's back saying he shouldn't be kicked out for crumpling the cards. Apparently, crumpling cards is worth about a two round penalty. Because Matt Glantz weighed in and said that's all he would have gotten had he not threatened to blow torch the place. Eriquezzo clarified that he said he'd blow torch the place on twitter (which he did, and is why everybody knows about it). SEMINOLE HARD ROUGH 10 MILLION GUARANTEE SCHEDULE IS OUT: This august things heat up in Florida. Stretching from the 14th all the way into September the SHR is going to be offering a lot of poker. WSOP CIRCUIT NEW ORLEANS: BATOON WINS EVENT FIVE: Matthew Batoon
of Austin, TX won 17k and the ring. The former
cultural anthropology student put his major to good use.
Dennis Crowley of Pearland, TX was runner up for 10k.
Na BOOTH RULES ROOST IN EVENT SIX: While we were pulling for Jerry Giroir at the final table there were lots of rooting interests there. That includes the winner Justin Booth, who we've heard fits the "good" guy seal of approval. HART ATTACKS SIX MAX: Jonathan Hart of Jackson, MS despite being a young player was probably overdue for his first ring. Consider that milestone checked off the list. He beat a loaded final table that included Justin Truesdell to win 21k. Todd Sousa of NOLA finished 10th. He was joined in the money by Brian Fontana of Slidell, William Stanford of Tupeloe, MS, John Durio of Metairie, and Kevin Eyster of Lafayette. WEST BEST IN EVENT 8: Tim West beat circuit reg Chris Parsons in heads up play to earn his second ring. Robert Keller of Gulf Shores, and Tim Martin of NOLA made the final table. David Nicholson added another cash, though still got passed in the Casino Champion race by West. Drake Roetker and Jeffrey Sager also cashed again. Bradley Glasser and Joe Didonato both from New Orleans made the mone. One other notable, Randy Landry, is listed as from Las Vegas, but is a Louisiana local, cashed. We understand he also had a final table earlier in the week we might have missed.

FIRST PLACE: Jason Potter of Tulsa Oklahoma ripped through the turbo event to win 18k for first. He beat Jacque Gremillion of Gonzales, LA in heads up. Gremillion won 11k for second. Jerry Girior (pictured) of Lafayette got close again winning almost 6k for 4th. Blake Barousse, added another final table to his resume, as he finished seventh. Shawn Calvit of Lafayette, Lance Cone, of Tallulah, Andrew Rust, of Scot, LA, and Jed Dyrek of Lake Charles all made the money. BOATMAN WINS EVENT 10 1k BUY-IN: In the tenth event, tens played a vital role in Arthur Boatman's win. Behind the pocket Aces of second place finisher Puneet Modha (of Baton Rouge), Boatman had top pair of tens. The money got in and another ten found the board. The Tampa, FL player won almost 50k for first. Modha settled for 30k. Also, at the final table, Kevin Eyster won 16k for fourth. John Holley of Destin, FL finished seventh for 7k. Robert Iversen of Gulf Breeze, FL, Ben Thomas of Baton Rouge, Seth Dunlap of NOLA, Erica Sumner of Walker, LA (her third cash of the series) and Friend of GCP Chris Sumerall of Houma all cashed. YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR: WSOP-ACADEMEY DECIMATES A COUPLE OF TOURNAMENTS: Saturday and Sunday last week, the WSOP-Academy rolled into town. After one day of lessons under Phil Gordon, many of the Academy players decided to take on a nightly. No fewer than seven out of the final nine were Academy players. A whopping 14 out of the final three tables were Academy players Considering there were only 20 or so entrants out of 146 it defies logic a little bit. First place was won by David Preng, who beat fellow Academy player Martin Sirkin. The next night, after the graduation of the Academy players, Scott Billips went to his second final table in a row. The top prize was taken down by GCP's own Wild Bill Phillips who helped coach at the Academy. Three other Academy students also made the money. Congrats to Phil Gordon, Bronson Tucker, Ben Logan (and Wild Bill) for some great tutelage and to the students for applying it. Can't argue with results. Meanwhile, several other students went deep and cashed in Noon Events. AND UPDATED: one student was one of the chipleaders after day one of the Main Event. More on the main to come. |

Bruce Little of Covington just missed the final table. So too Erica Sumner of Walker, LA. Also cashing from Louisiana were Faith Giordano, Kent Landry, James Hutches, James Arruebarena, Thomas McEachin, James Hauk, Donal Dove, and Simplicio Losauro. Mississippi barely represented in this tournament with Kamran Shahlaei and William Stanford min-cashing. PLAYBOY AND THE KID IN EVENT THREE: Heads up Austin Bursavich of Baton Rouge fell just short of all the glory against David Nicholson of Perkinston, MS in the PLO event. The Playboy won 10k while the kid earned 6.4k. Walter Chambers and Doug Gambel also cashed. So too Gary Clark of Jackson MS. PENSACOLA DOG TRACK NIPPED AT THE LINE: Two regs from Pensacola Gordon Hardy and John Langevin both went Deep in the big Event 4A re-entry. Hardy, an Atmore, AL, native busted fifth for 10k. Langevin, fresh off his Main Event win at the Beau, won 6.5k for seventh. Ricky Marks of Chalmette earned almost 20k for third. Erica Sumner got her second cash of the series with a final table appearance (sixth 8.3k). Too many locals cashed to name everybody but go here to see for yourself. |

Look left. COLSON WHITEHEAD TALKS WSOP AND RYAN LENAGHAN: Novelist Colson Whitehead went to the WSOP on Grantland's dime and then wrote a book The Noble Hustle: Poker, Beef Jerky and Death. NPR had him on to talk about his experience. In the Fresh Air segment, he mentions playing with a "Robotron" (which we thought was the home planet of the Transformers so maybe we are misremembering what he said). Whatever noun he used/created he meant an Internet hoodie'd kid. The one he referenced turned out to be Ryan Lenaghan. One thing we know for 90% certainty, the offer was not above what Chad said he was hoping to get in his pre-interview, unless Chad had no idea what it was really worth and the expert they brought in blew his mind with how much value his piece actually had. Then Chad still walked away. |

Thanks to Johnny Grooms, Paul, Eric, the dealers and all the tournament/support staff. Everything went smoothly this year and lots of positive things were said about the event, the numbers, the structures, and the options. The Beau is at its best when it provides those little extra perks to players. HARRAHS WEEKLY RESULTS AND NEWS: MISSISSIPPI TO STUDY INTERNET GAMING/SPORTS BETTING: Despite the best efforts of Sheldon Adelson (who ironically just got in trouble for his casino's allowing minors to play), online gaming movements seem to be gaining traction in different parts of the country. Now it appears Mississippi is going to give the idea some further thought. Poker News Daily's Earl Burton wrote this piece on where things stand. Also, this article in the Biloxi-Gulfport Sun Herald. PRISSY JUST MISSES SIX MAX FINAL TABLE: Prissy and Jerry Giroir of Lafayette, LA put together a great trip to the Beau Rivage. After her husband cashed twice Prissy was looking to make a final table of her own but unfortunately lost a coin flip to finish seventh in Event 7. Miki Asunscion of New York went on to win the event and become the first female winner of this series. Reed Cooley of Santa Rosa Beach, FL (4th 1.1k) Jeremy Eyer of Gulfport, MS (3rd 1.5k) Warren Hughes of Mobile, AL (2nd 2.4k) and Kevin Baker of La Grange, GA finished in the money. This final table showcased players who would go on to several other high finishes later in the week. Starting with the winner of the very next event... Reed Cooley... NO COOLING OFF:
After a final table in the Six Max Event, Air Force pilot Reed Cooley went out and won the No Limit Hold'em Event 8 the very next day. Cooley bagged 3.5k for first. Stephen Rowell of Mobile finished third for 1.5k. HERB TAPSCOTT TOPS IN EVENT 9: Hartselle, AL's Herbert Tascott beat Stan James of D'Iverville, MS in heads up play of the Pot Limit Omaha 8 or Better event. Of late James has been winning every 8 or Better tournament he's entered so when he had Tapscott down to almost the felt, you'd think it was all but a formality. Tapscott had other ideas and the credentials to make the comeback. After all he's a Circuit ring and WSOP bracelet winner. One rush later and it was Tapscott posing for the winner's photo this time and winning 2.4k. Tommy Welborn of Cornelia, GA finished third and Jay Hall of Lake Bruin, LA finished 5th both in the money. BAKER COULDN'T WIN HALF DOZEN BUT PREVAILS IN FULL RING: Just as Reed Cooley parlayed the confidence from his final table in the six max to a win later in the week, Kevin Baker of La Grange, GA did the same with a victory in Event 10. Baker won 3.4k for first. Unchong Bairos of Destin finished third for 1.3k. Terry Fisher of Pensacola, John Durio of NOLA, and Kory Dunn of Foley, AL finished 6th, 7th, and 8th respectively.

CHAMPLIN NOW A CHAMPION WINS EVENT 12: The Jonesville, LA business owner prevailed late in the night of the one day event. Friend of GCP Jerry Giroir (Lafayette, LA) pocketed his second cash of the series and made it to the chop. HIGHLIGHT FINAL 19 IN WPT JACKSONVILLE: Both Jason Mercier (pictured right) and Jonathan Racener are below chip average with 298k and 216k respectively (average 407k). Plenty of other notables dot the field including recent champ James Calderaro, Faraz Jaka, Luke Graham, Jordan Christos (2nd in chips), and Jared Jaffe (first in chips). First place is 206k. THE HEARTLAND POKER TOUR IN VICKSBURG: We have limited information about this event. We know that New Orleans rounder Teddy Conner had an early cash in one of the preliminary events. We know Ben Mintz and one of his buddies are at the final table of the Main Event. We also know they are now one of the most clandestine hosts of poker tournament anywhere (see Monkey's current blog). Not surprisingly, as the flow information only dribbles out we don't have much to share. We'd love to share the results with you so feel free to send updates to Wild Bill. BIG ONE FOR ONE DROP AGAIN: Can you keep calling it the Big One when it's the second one? The third one? Anyway, the WSOP is, and that refers to the Million Dollar entry event that benefits the One Drop Charity. Last time Antonio Esfandiari won it for 18 million. The tournament maxed out selling 48 out of 48 seats. This time the max has been raised to 56. At least half of the 2012 players have commited to play. PokerKing has the list here of those who are in. HAPPY MARDI GRAS POKER LINKS:
POKER PLAYER FAILS IN STRATEGY GAME: Survivor is a show that parallels tournament poker in a number of ways. Sometimes an elimination can be capricious or because of another player's mistake. Sometimes a bad player can luck box their way all the way to the title. Yet, often a tactical misstep will deservedly spell doom for a player. This past week of Survivor Garret Adelstein committed just such a misstep. Following in the tactical footsteps of Boston Rob, who found poker after Survivor, Adelstein tried to strong arm his team into a public vote. Only problem for Adelstein, Rob did this after taking control of his tribe mates, while Adelstein had no such power so early in the show. In what will go down as one the most embarrassing eliminations in Survivor history, somehow Adelstein got blindsided while possessing an immunity idol and not playing it. Even worse he did not even bring it to tribal council. What makes it even more worse was there was good reason for him to be confident. His rival on the chopping block had a temper tantrum and dumped out 98% of the food. Nobody has ever survived such an egregious action against the tribe in the history of the show. She also choked a gigantic lead in the challenge ( a lead primarily created by the brute strength of Adelstein in the water) by performing terribly at a puzzle she claimed she was good at. Again, another sin pretty much deemed unforgiveable in Survivors past. Not to mention that in the early days of the show she had the trinity of characteristics required of a player to be voted out strategy be damned. She was unlikable, bossy, and lazy. He didn't quite trip over his ego as badly as the Florida Marlin's President who went in the first elimination but Adelstein's send off in many ways was far worse. He said he was embarrassed in the postscript interview. He seems like at his heart he's a nice guy, so it's painful to write this, but Garret the poker world was embarrassed too. You can tell by his interview here he's pretty hard on himself too. Great poker-esque introspection complete with words like results oriented and playing optimal. It's a shame but he likely won't get a chance to learn from his mistake, as usually being voted off early makes it hard for you to get a recall in an All-Star episode. However, his misstep was pretty "Epic" so maybe we'll see more of him on an island in the Pacific.
BAZELEY BARELY: What a great story by Paul Oresteen over at Bluff Magazine (read here). Jacoby Bazeley who used to be a fixture on the Gulf Coast Tournament poker scene got one of his biggest scores after a night out with friends. A quick trip to Mexico and one Sunday Millions final table later, means this will be one drunken decision Baze won't ever regret. PELTON PENALIZED: Chan Pelton is a lightening rod for criticism. We've seen his story light up opinions both on his behalf and against. To recap: the Palm Beach Kennel Club confiscated his winnings and vacated his POY points after he was seen removing a chip from his stack prior to winning a tournament on the WSOP-C. Pelton claimed he was adding it to his souvenir collection. It was the second win for him in Palm Beach and locked up the Casino Championship (and a spot in the National Championship), until he removed the chip. There is also a furor about him and the second place player possibly agreeing to a chop with the points at stake. The debate rages on everywhere particularily this 2+2 Thread. |

GREEN FRIDAY:
The best thing to happen to poker players would probably be to finalize these remissions the day after the World Series of Poker. The best thing for the poker economy might have been for them to pay everybody back the day before the World Series of Poker. Instead, payday for many will be February 28th, 2014. In truth, any day we get paid, what is rightfully ours, is a good day. Friday, Green Friday, is a good Friday and a far better day than the Black Friday that started this mess. Twitter and Facebook is already blowing with former online players celebrating their balances being returned to them. Congrats to those getting paid, our condolences to those that still have to wait, and good luck with however you choose to use all that loot. |

MSPT WINNER, LOCALS AT WSOP-C RESULTS:
SHAWN SCHORECK WINS MID-STATES POKER TOUR: Gretna resident Shawn Schoreck outlasted tour regular Kou Vang in heads up action to win 34k. On the ultimate hand Schoreck called Vang's shove and said, "I guess I have to get lucky," but the only luck he needed was for the best hand to hold. His pocket sixes did just that against Vang's pocket threes. Vang won 21k for second. Third place went to Daniel Holmes, of Lafayette, LA who also fell to Schoreck. Holmes' pocket 8s lost the flip to Ak. GCP's Poker Monkey Will Souther got knocked out just before him in fourth. The last woman standing, Belle of Baton Rouge regular Erica Sumner finished tenth. Michael Benton finished ninth, Allen Kessler eighth, Mihail Karasoulis seventh and Robbie Matthews sixth. Other notables crashed just before the bubble and within the money. Seville Hale of Florida, had a long trip back as an unlikely bubble boy. Considering the grueling bubble spanned five levels going hand for hand, with short stacks winning every all-in, it's no surprise stacks got turned upside down during the course of it. It was most painful for Hale who went from chipleader to the last person to leave without a stop at the cashiers cage. Justin Truesdale and David Chocheles busted out on the same hand but in the money when Vang made a loose call to get a little closer to the final table. GCP's Gene D finished a couple of spots from the money. Almost there too were Nick Graphia, Ben Thomas, GCP's Bill Phillips, Andrew Ashby, Claudia Crawford, Austin Bursavich and Lynn Morris.

VEGAS: While many of the pros stayed on the Coast for the MSPT a fair amount already had travel plans to go the Circuit Event in Caesers Las Vegas. Caufman Talley cashed shortly after touching down in event one. He repeated his feat making the money of event two. Josh Mancuso of Baton Rouge (pictured) had even better luck just missing the final table but winning almost 4k for tenth place in the reentry event. Chris Conrad of the Florida Panhandle settled for second. Jerry Ard also got a min cash. FIELDS MAKES SURVIVING LARGE FIELDS LOOK EASY: Within nine months, recent Alabama grad Eric Fields almost has a ring collection as big as Nick Saban's. The youngster won his third ring since debuting in a New Orleans circuit event (that he also won) last May. This time the payday was a little bit bigger as Fields will be taking home 52k. His stats are gaudy. Since last May he's won almost 300k, with 12 cashes, 6 final tables and 3 rings. |

of people on his way to some big scores on the coast is in
hospice battling his cancer. Upon hearing the news the
WSOP awarded him an honorary bracelet, that's well
deserved and speaks to the impact he made on a lot of
people. He was a man who was almost universally loved
and if you ever need to see an example of his disposition
look no further than a memorable interaction with Men the
Master. We'd write more, but think the words of
Jennifer Gay will be better written than any we'd craft.
